BMI Honors Legendary Music Executive and Songwriter Clive Davis

BMI has expressed sadness over the passing of renowned music executive Clive Davis, who died at the age of 94.

Widely regarded as one of the most important figures in modern music history, Davis played a major role in shaping the careers of many of the world’s most successful artists and songwriters. His work across multiple record labels helped expand the influence of popular music for generations.

Clive Davis’ Connection to BMI

Beyond his achievements as an executive and label founder, Davis was also a longtime BMI affiliate.

He notably received co-writing credit on Air Supply’s major hit “All Out Of Love,” a BMI Award-winning song that has earned millions of performances over the years.

BMI executives have also worked with students at the prestigious NYU Clive Davis Institute, speaking to music classes about the role of a performing rights organization in a songwriter’s career.

Early Life and Rise at Columbia Records

Davis was raised in Brooklyn and later graduated from New York University and Harvard Law School.

He joined Columbia Records, where he became president in 1967. During his time there, he helped guide the label into the rock era by signing Janis Joplin and supporting artists such as Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Earth, Wind & Fire, Neil Diamond and Pink Floyd.

Building Arista Records and Launching Icons

In 1974, Davis founded Arista Records, building one of the most powerful rosters in the music business.

The label helped develop and promote major artists including Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin and Patti Smith.

One of Davis’ most defining achievements was helping transform Whitney Houston into a global superstar.

Later Ventures and Lasting Influence

Davis continued shaping popular music through later ventures such as LaFace Records, J Records and Bad Boy Records.

Those labels helped introduce and elevate artists including The Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans and Alicia Keys.

He also reunited with Santana for Supernatural, a worldwide hit album that won the GRAMMY Award for Album of the Year.
