Adaptive Music Ensemble Performs at USA Special Olympics Games in Minnesota
A Twin Cities band made up of musicians with intellectual disabilities performed at the Special Olympics USA Games Fan Fest at the University of Minnesota.
The group, known as Emergence, played as athletes from across the country arrived in Minnesota for the games, bringing music and energy to the celebration.
Band Uses the Three Strings Method
Emergence is part of Three Strings, a music teaching approach created by Ruth Pippa Lemay.
Instead of relying on traditional sheet music, the method teaches musicians through colors, shapes, symbols and other familiar learning tools.
Lemay said the system is built around things people often learn before starting school, such as counting, shapes, colors and the alphabet.
Making Music More Accessible
According to Lemay, Three Strings can help students begin playing along with songs they love in less than an hour.
The goal is to make music feel possible for people who may have thought learning an instrument was out of reach.
Weekly Rehearsals Build Skill and Community
For the members of Emergence, rehearsals are about more than practice. The group meets every Thursday in a basement, where musicians work on vocals, drums, guitars and stage performance.
The weekly sessions also give members a strong sense of community and connection.
One singer, Michael, said he had wanted to sing since he was 15. He said being able to perform as a singer instead of only playing guitar felt amazing.
Another band member, Vanessa Hanson, said the group’s focus is simple: making music together and enjoying the experience.
Performance Exceeds Expectations
After the Fan Fest performance, Lemay said the band went beyond what she had hoped for.
She said the musicians were clearly having the time of their lives on stage.
Lemay hopes Three Strings continues to grow and reaches more people who have always dreamed of making music. She described the program as a bridge that helps people realize they truly can participate.
Next Emergence Performance
Emergence is also scheduled to perform Tuesday at The National Sports Center in Blaine from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Emergence’s performance at the Special Olympics USA Games Fan Fest highlighted the power of accessible music education and community. Through the Three Strings method, musicians with intellectual disabilities are gaining confidence, learning new skills and sharing their talent with wider audiences.
