According to Ian Gillan, the song began in a very instinctive way.
He said he was in the studio without lyrics prepared, so he simply started screaming with the joy of the moment. Gillan added that the performance reminded him of a promise he once made to stop screaming by the time he reached 60, a promise he now looks back on with amusement.
Guilt Trippin’ Explores a Surreal Concept
The song imagines an unusual conversation between God and Charles Darwin, with the two reflecting on the condition of humanity while sharing a drink.
The music video takes a similarly strange and dreamlike approach. It follows a fly and a sycamore seed spacecraft through a surreal landscape, matching the track’s unusual concept and heavy tone.
Diablo Featured Keith Urban
“Guilt Trippin’” follows “Arrogant Boy,” which was released in May, and “Diablo,” which arrived earlier this month.
“Diablo” drew extra attention because it features Australian guitarist Keith Urban as a guest performer, a collaboration previously reported by Noise11.
Bob Ezrin Continues Long Partnership With Deep Purple
Splat! continues Deep Purple’s long-running creative relationship with producer Bob Ezrin.
Ezrin first worked with the band on Now What?! in 2013 and has since produced InFinite, Whoosh!, Turning To Crime, =1, and now Splat!. This makes the new album his sixth consecutive studio project with Deep Purple.
Simon McBride Returns for Second Studio Album
The album is also the second Deep Purple studio release to feature guitarist Simon McBride, following 2024’s =1.
McBride joined the band after Steve Morse departed and has become a key part of Deep Purple’s modern sound.
