Tribute Concert Set to Celebrate Syd Barrett’s 80th Birthday
A special concert honouring the life and legacy of Syd Barrett, the legendary early creative force behind Pink Floyd, will take place in his home city of Cambridge during the year he would have turned 80.
The tribute event is scheduled for October 10 at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, a venue with deep significance in Barrett’s history. It was also the place where he gave his final live performance on February 24, 1972.
Artists Confirmed for the Tribute Concert
The concert will feature a wide range of performers paying tribute to Barrett’s music and influence. Confirmed contributors include Kula Shaker, Soft Machine, Men on the Border, Diana Silveira & The Psychedelic Circus, Radhika, and Pünk Floyd.
The event is expected to celebrate Barrett’s lasting impact on psychedelic rock, experimental music, and generations of artists who continue to draw inspiration from his work.
Syd Barrett’s Family Supports the Event
Barrett’s sister, Rosemary Breen, said the family is pleased to support the commemorative events. She shared that Syd would have felt deeply happy and honoured knowing that his music is still being enjoyed in Cambridge.
Breen also said the family fully supports the events because they will raise money for mental health charities, a cause closely connected to Barrett’s later life and public story.
Organisers Highlight Barrett’s Lasting Influence
Neil Jones, one of the event’s co-organisers, said Barrett’s influence remains powerful even 80 years after his birth. He noted that Barrett’s creativity, music, and distinctive artistic vision continue to inspire both musicians and listeners across different generations.
The celebration aims to recognize not only Barrett’s role in Pink Floyd’s early success but also his broader cultural legacy as one of British music’s most original figures.
Who Was Syd Barrett?
Born Roger Barrett in Cambridge, he began using the nickname “Syd” during his teenage years. He later became one of the founding figures of Pink Floyd and played a major role in shaping the band’s early sound.
Barrett was the group’s main songwriter and creative leader during its formative period. His imaginative writing, experimental guitar work, and psychedelic ideas helped define Pink Floyd’s first era.
However, just as the band began gaining wider attention, Barrett’s drug use and mental health struggles contributed to increasingly unpredictable behaviour. This eventually led to his departure from Pink Floyd.
After leaving the band, Barrett returned to Cambridge, where he lived a quieter life away from the spotlight. He found peace in painting and remained largely private until his death in 2006.
Commemorative Double Album Set for Release
The anniversary will also be marked with the release of a special commemorative double album on October 9. The project will include new recordings as well as previously unreleased material.
Artists involved in the album include Kula Shaker, All About Eve, Mystery Jets, Rosalie Cunningham, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets.
The release is expected to give fans a fresh way to experience Barrett’s musical legacy while also highlighting the admiration he continues to receive from major artists.
Exhibition to Explore Barrett’s Life and Art
In addition to the concert and album, an exhibition will explore Barrett’s life, artwork, and cultural importance. The display will focus on his creative world beyond music, including his visual art and the lasting influence he has had on British culture.
Together, the concert, album, and exhibition will offer a wider tribute to Barrett as a songwriter, performer, artist, and cultural figure.
Proceeds to Support Mental Health Charities
All proceeds from the anniversary events will be donated to mental health charities. The charitable focus gives the tribute added meaning, especially given the public awareness around Barrett’s mental health struggles after leaving Pink Floyd.
The upcoming Syd Barrett tribute in Cambridge will celebrate the life, music, and artistic influence of one of Pink Floyd’s most important early members. With a concert at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, a commemorative double album, an exhibition, and support from Barrett’s family, the events will honour his legacy while raising funds for mental health charities.
